Last year in the UK, the globally recognised Grime artist, Stormzy, introduced his very own scholarship for black students in the UK. In the USA, Footaction and its parent company Footlocker have now teamed up with Pensole Academy for the No 1 Way Design Program. The functional apparel design competition is now open to recent graduates or current students at all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the USA in partnership with Footaction, Footlocker and the PENSOLE Academy in Portland.
Mentoring will be provided throughout the competition provided by the Academy and five finalists will be selected for the PENSOLE Master Class turning their designs into real life products. The participants of the Master Class will go on to present their final products and collections as part of New York Fashion Week in February 2020. 3 finalists will receive cash prizes with the the final winner seeing their product going into Footaction retail stores in the US. Apply here for the No 1 Way Design Program.
“The No 1 Way Design Program underscores the need to grow and foster diversity and creativity in our industry. We have chosen to work with HBCU students in order to celebrate the creative energy of this community and develop a platform to foster and express their individuality.”
